If you exit out for any reason, this adaptive difficulty level resets, and you'll be playing against them at full strength again. The game seems to have an adaptive difficulty level: if you lose three times in a row, then on your fourth attempt, the AI starts playing a bit more sloppily and less aggressively.
Note that if you're struggling with a particular match, especially the handicap matches, don't back out immediately. All fights in Story Mode are best-of-three rounds unless otherwise noted in the walkthrough, regardless of the Rounds setting in the Options screen. We'll get you through it, but remember that practice makes perfect, and many fights in MK come down to good timing and, sometimes, a little bit of luck. Winning is all that matters here, but you'll frequently find yourself on the wrong end of lopsided fights. Easier difficulties make the AI opponents a bit more sloppy and less aggressive, though all moves-yours and the AI's-will retain their respective strengths. Speaking of difficulties, you can set the difficulty from the options screen of the main menu. Given that you're playing as several characters over the course of the mode, you'll need to be fairly familiar with everyone's moves: button-mashing will get you pretty far, but you'll need to really get comfortable with the characters to finish everything up, even on the easier difficulties.
You'll earn tons of Koins the first time through (though sadly not for subsequent playthroughs), and the story is pretty fun (in a B-movie way) to watch, giving you some meaning for the 67 fights you'll be facing.
In Story Mode, you will play through the mythology of Mortal Kombat's fiction, all the way back from an alternate and more detailed look at the original Mortal Kombat.
