If the system will boot totally naked, try plugging things in one at a time. (I couldn't reproduce the symptom outside of the office)
I once took a PC from the customer's office to the shop, to the office to the shop and back to the office, before figuring out that it was a bent keyboard connector on the keyboard. Use a screwdriver to power it on (momentary touch the pins that the power switch normally connects to)Īlso, unplug and inspect the keyboard and mouse pins. While you have it out on the desk our of the case, disconnect EVERYTHING except the power supply and the RAM (no drives, no ISA/PCI cards). Since it boots after a few seconds, it COULD be a bad (sticking or dirty connectors) on the power switch, or the reset button is building capacitance.
